Shauna Grant as Virginia (1983) - A review of an erotic film classic

From time to time I like to post about topics other than male companionship in my blog. Last night I saw a "vintage" (by today's standards) porn film called Virginia starring Shauna Grant. She was one of the biggest adult film actresses in the early 80s until her tragic death from a suicide in 1984 cut short her troubled but fascinating life. I would like to share my thoughts and feelings about the film with you.

I had always been interested in Shauna and had read about Virginia until I finally decided to download it. If you're used to watching too many inane hardcore gonzo pornos where they start going at it like rabbits in five seconds, this movie is not for you. This movie came out during porn's "Golden Age" (70s/early-to-mid-80s) when there were actually production values, scripts, plot lines, and the performers were required to act like in a mainstream Hollywood movie. Yes, there are still big budget porn films still being made today, but they're not as prominent as they were "back in the day" when they were still shot on film.

In my opinion the earlier adult films were more experimental and edgier than anything you see today. Shauna plays the title role, an innocent, naive, virginal young girl who struggles to repress her feelings of erotic love for her own father, Jonathan Glass, played by Paul Thomas. Such taboo topics like incest or underage teen sex were quite common in those days. Today such themes aren't explored as much, if at all, as far as I know.

Virginia is an underrated film. It's not as famous as Deep Throat, Behind the Green Door, or The Devil in Miss Jones, but it's right up there with them, as far as I'm concerned. I liked how the women were natural and didn't shave. They weren't all cookie-cutter with fake boobs, and didn't wear those stupid plastic high heels. Even though it's a strange film, I found myself interested in the plot as much as the sex. There's an underlying theme to Virginia that's psychological. The less I say about it, the better, but this final unraveling of the true plot line totally blew me away because it was so damn creative - and I never would've guessed!

The final sex scene between Virginia and Jonathan was incredible. It really made me feel something other than being turned on. I felt nervous knowing the two characters about to consummate their forbidden love were father and daughter. I also felt such sadness to the point that I started to cry. Everything I have read about Shauna and how she ended up just makes the the scene even more poignant and heartbreaking to watch. How could such a beautiful girl be destroyed?

The scene is like a romantic fantasy come to life, a rarity in adult films. We actually see Jonathan seducing Virginia, and plenty of foreplay before the main event. The director made the camera moves slow and deliberate. There's no rush, and it may seem slow to people who aren't used to this kind of romanticism and true passion, which is what made it so wonderful to watch.

It has been said Shauna didn't like having sex on camera very much, that she lacked enthusiasm during her scenes. She certainly fooled me in this one. I don't care what kind of scene it is - to play love, you must feel it. There is no faking it to make it look convincing to your audience. Paul and Shauna had amazing chemistry and understood the maturity and depth of feeling it took to act in this scene, to the point where it doesn't even feel like acting - that's how real it is. I think they both had balls to pull it off. That is the closest to lovemaking (not just two pros fucking) I have ever seen in an porn movie that it is almost an insult to call it one. I would say Virginia is a classic of erotica, at least this particular scene is. Nothing this lovely and tender that has been captured onscreen could ever be considered bad or dirty.

If you're curious about classic adult films, you should definitely check this one out just for the Grant/Thomas scene alone (if the idea of incest doesn't bother you too much). This film has become of one my favorites.

Here's a rare interview of Shauna from 1983 with her agent, Bobby Hollander, and porn legend Jamie Gillis.

Dude, where's my male escort?

Spotted this mobile billboard (253-DUDE) by the Stratosphere as I was waiting for the Express bus one night after work. I don't know if this agency is a gay male escort agency, or if it was truly revolutionary, a straight one, which would be the first of its kind in Clark County that I know of. I got a kick out of it nonetheless and I had to snap a pic.

And no, I didn't call the number. LOL. ;-)
